Kazakhstan alpinists have planted a state flag at the summit of Nursultan Peak near Almaty city in Zailiyskiy Alatau mountains, Tengrinews.kz reports. Alpinists Maksut Zhumayev, Aleksandr Rudakov and Boris Dedeshko ascended the Peak on November 29. “I suggested to launch an expedition to the summit of Nursultan Peak and to plant Kazakhstan’s flag at the peak as a part of celebration of the First President’s Day one month ago. (…) And we have planted the flag in support of this holiday and Flag on the Summit project,” mountain climber Maksut Zhumayev said. He also said that the ascent to Nursultan Peak is a social campaign aimed at promotion of healthy life-style and outdoor activity. “We hope that our campaign will promote a favorable image of this holiday (First President’s Day). It can be celebrated in many other places except squares. In our opinion, we could organize some sports events, for example, Mountain Climbing tournaments. However, nobody has supported us so far,” the mountain climber said. Alpinist said that there were some difficulties during their ascent to the summit. “The weather was very unfavorable on November 29 not only for the ascent, but even for getting around within Almaty city,” Zhumayev said. Even though we prepared the route well the ascent to the peak was excessively long. “We kicked off at six a.m. And we reached the Peak only at 3 p.m. Then we had difficulty descending because it was very avalanche-prone at downhill. We reached Shymbulak (a mointain skiing resort near Almaty) at nine p.m. Guys from Shymbulak, both staff and rescuers helped us further on. They got us down by ratrack from Talgar col to the hotel,” the mountain climber said. Nursultan Peak (renamed in 1997, the old name was Komsomol Peak) is situated in the northern part of Malo-Almatinsky Ridge. The first ascent to Nursultan Peak (3486m) took place on July 17, 1930. The first climbers were Almaty alpinists: G.Beloglazov, V.Gorbunov and I.Mysovsky.
