The Almaty Annual Charitable Marathon, held since 2012, has gained an international status, Tengrinews reports. The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) officially approved inclusion of the Almaty Marathon into the Association and sent the letter confirming the full membership. The AIMS is an international non-profit sports organization that unites over 350 leading distance races from over 98 countries. AIMS works together with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to ensure that its road races are measured accurately. The organization also sets rules and standards for marathons and distance races, distinguishes the criteria of doping control, registers official results and acknowledges world records. Now Kazakhstan sports event are in the same category as the renowned New York and Athens marathons that have over 45 thousand participants. The AIMS membership allows Kazakhstan to invite prominent athletes from all over the world, provides access to the international network of top races and international recognition for the local event with increased profile for sponsors, city and runners. The 3rd Almaty Charitable Marathon will be held on April 20, 2014. It is expected to attract around 10 000 participants. Those wishing to take part in the 3-, 10-, 21- and 42.195-kilometer races will have to pay a small entry fee. All the raised money will be used for charity after the marathon ends. The 1st Almaty Charitable Marathon 2012 was held to support and raise money for treatment of Kazakhstan children with ICP (Infantile Cerebral Paralysis). The money raised during the 2nd Almaty Charitable Marathon was spent on Ardi mini aqua center, a rehabilitation center for children with ICP. The mini aqua center has a swimming pool, sauna and shower rooms. A roofed pavilion with a beach and recreation area surrounds the aqua center. The next Almaty Charitable Marathon 2014 is going to support Breath, Baby projects of Ayala and Dara funds. These projects are aimed at providing maternity and children hospitals with advanced equipment that is needed for children with serious diseases. “The Almaty Marathon's accession into the AIMS makes it the first public sports marathon of international level in Central Asia,” Saltanat Kazybayeva, Director of Almaty Marathon, says. Registration of participants for the 3rd International Almaty Marathon starts on January 15, 2014. The marathon has an official website.
