Zharas Alimkhanov, a student of Nazarbayev Intellectual School (NIS) in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan and his team have won Through Glass international contest in Valencia, Spain, Tengrinews reports referring to Kazakhstanskaya Pravda.

Zharas Alimkhanov went to Valencia at an invitation of the international organizations involved in development and implementation of new technologies publicized at Start Up Weekend and ESIC.

To attract their attention the Kazakh student of 12th grade of NIS sent a project called Modeling and Programming of Unmanned Aircraft to the contest organizers before the contest. "With this remotely controlled quadcopter equipped with an online camera one can made a flyover over the most inaccessible locations to gather detailed information. For example, during natural disasters the smart device can be used to identify location of people," Alimkhanov said.

At Through Glass contest everyone got the same task: to propose an idea for development of Google Glass. Zharas suggested creating an application for simultaneous translation of audio and text online. As required by the contest Zharas picked up 3 adult programmers and designers to put together a team, and together they developed a presentation. At this stage only 5 teams out of 20 were left and continued into the final, with Zharas' team being among those who remained.

The 5 teams then had two days to develop their applications and demonstrate their operability and efficiency. It was a difficult task since the program had to be written in java, a rather complex programming language. After finishing the design of the application, they had to create a business plan.

Finally, jury members evaluated the works of all 5 teams as well as the contributions of each member of the teams and nominated Zharas’ project for the 1st place.

The team led by the Kazakhstani student then signed three contracts, one of them with Google Corporation. According to its terms, the team will take part in development and software engineering of new applications and programs for the corporation. To do this, the team members will meet in August this year.

Since Zharas Alimkhanov is graduating from NIS high school this year, Google Corporation offered him an opportunity to study in a university of his choice.
