Kazakhstan genetics grow embryonic stem cells

Kazakhstan genetics have developed a technology for transforming adult stem cells into embryonic ones, Gaziza Danlybayeva, an expert in immunochemistry and immunobiotechnology with the National Biotechnology Center of Kazakhstan told Tengrinews.kz. Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka received the Noble Prize in medicine and physiology for a similar development in 2012. This is the first time such research is performed in Kazakhstan. The technology includes extracting stem cells from an adult and returning them into the embryo form. According to Danlybayeva, embryonic cells are more functional as they can be used to reconstruct different types of tissues: skin, bone, cartilaginous and vascular. On November 2012 Kazakhstan genetics received two markers of embryonic stem cells. The scientists are studying their features and, first of all, safe use in medicine. Meanwhile the markers are being tested on laboratory mice. It will take 3-4 months to test the samples. Stem cells are used around the world in oncology and cardiology, for treatment of leukemia, traumas and burns. The technology is also used in anti-aging medicine. Earlier the researchers of the National Biotechnology Center successfully tested an artificial skin technology on its patients. This method of treatment is also based on the use of stem cells. It is based on creation of fibroblasts (skin cells) from a small piece of a donor’s or the patient’s skin. This medicine is made in the form of a spray. The use of the artificial skin helped double the speed of healing. Moreover, this method helps save the lives of those with extensive burns who suffer from lack of donor skin. By Dmitriy Khegai
