Ukraine is interested in renewing direct gas supplies from Kazakhstan like those it was receiving before 2005, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports citing Ukrainian PM Nikolay Azarov as saying at the meeting with Kazakhstan first deputy PM Bakytzhan Sagintayev in Kiev. “We are ready to expand cooperation in the use of transport, in particular the pipelines. I think that this is what Kazakhstan is interested in as well. It has sufficient oil and gas reserves and it could traded with us not only via Russia, but also directly, the way it was before 2005. This would comply with the interests of both countries,” Ukrainian PM said. According to Azarov’s website, the Prime-Minister reminded that creation of the free trade zone between CIS countries provides for signing of an agreement on free access to pipeline transport of CIS member-countries and thus, gives opportunities for direct supplies of Kazakhstan oil and gas to Ukraine. Azarov believes that creation of the Customs Union that includes Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan has complicated the trade and economic relations within CIS. That’s why it is now necessary to work out new cooperation mechanisms. Besides, Prime-Minister once again reminded that Ukraine would like to receive the observer status in the Customs Union. “This would not allow us to influence the process, but would enable us to take part in the decision-making process and be aware of the issues prepared for adoption in the Customs Union,” Azarov said.
