A new geographically dispersed office (GDO) for primary health care in Kazakhstan has been opened at the Kazakh National Medican University of S.Asfendiyarov in Almaty, Tengrinews reports.
The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan Stephen Tull talked about opening hub offices and branches of a dozen of UN agencies during the presentation of the GDO today.
By opening hubs and branches in the country, the UN aims to expand the regional cooperation. “Kazakhstan is ready to play a growing role in sub regional, regional and global spheres and follow the path of sustainable development. Our country UN team is planning to help it achieve these goals. The center (GDO) that we are opening now will help implement the reforms in the region. Kazakhstan is an excellent representative of UN values, and we fully support this. Almaty has already been chosen by more than ten UN agencies and other international organizations as a sub regional, multi country and regional hub office,” Tull said.
In particular, representatives of UN’s environmental program are interested in opening an office in Almaty. The organization coordinates nature preservation measures. UN-Habitat Human Settlement Program is also interested in an office in Almaty city. UN-Habitat works towards a better urban future through by promoting socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and achieving adequate shelter for all.
In the meanwhile some of the agencies that already have offices in Almaty plan to expend their offices and improve long-term cooperation with the region through strengthening their presence in Kazakhstan.
According to the head the Kazakh Medical University, the GDO of the WHO's European Bureau in Almaty will be financed by the UN. The University is only providing offices. “The idea of the right for health and the right for primary healthcare has been formed here in Almaty (WHO Declaration of Alma-Ata, September 1978). The principles developed at the Alma-Ata International Conference on Primary Health Care were used in developed countries across the globe. These principles are the foundation. That is why it was decided to create the geographically dispersed office for primary health care here in Almaty. All these countries will be working together and sharing experience to develop the principles of the primary health care,” Akanov said.
