Romanian PM visits Kazakhstan first time in 20 years

Prime-Minister of Romania Victor Ponta met with Kazakhstan Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov and Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the end of June, Tengrinews.kz reports. A week before the visit the official representative of the Central Communications Center Altai Abibullayev said: “Prime-Minister Victor Ponta will render an official visit to Kazakhstan on June 27 upon Kazakhstan's invitation. He will focus on a broad range of bilateral issues and development of the mutual trade and economic cooperation. Romania is one of Kazakhstan's most important partners in South-Eastern Europe. “The geographical location of our countries offers opportunities for development of transport and transit cooperation,” he said. Victor Ponta met Kazakhstan Prime-Minister during his visst. They had a joint briefing after the meting the Romanian PM said that Romanian companies were interested in Kazakhstan's IT: "The fact that today's visit to Astana is the first visit in 20 years of or bilateral relation tells us that we should meet more often and visit each other. During the negotiations we discussed Romanian companies' interest in Kazakhstan's information IT products and other goods," said and asked his Kazakhstan counterpart to support implementation of the initiatives. Serik Akhmetov said that the meeting helped the countries define prospects of their interaction and economic relations: "We have agreed to develop cultural and educational exchange. We also had a business discussion of energy cooperation. I think will we ink some agreements and continue working on their in the framework of the inter-government commission. We have good potential for close cooperation in various sectors of the economy". Agreements on cooperation in joint training of military personnel and on cultural cooperation were signed during the visit. Later into the visit Victor Ponta met with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev to discuss energy cooperation. They also agreed to create a joint investment fund to help Romania develop its energy. They also discussed cooperation in trade, investments and transport, the presidential press-service reported. Nazarbayev believes that the visit of the Romanian Prime-Minister is a good opportunity to expend the two country's partnership: "You have had meetings with Prime-Minster of Kazakhstan and members of its government to discuss new ways of development of our cooperation. There is a good exchange of visits between out countries these days: I visited Romania and President of Romania visited Kazakhstan. In spite of the general slow down of the global economy commodity turnover between our two countries has been growing." "Operation of Rompetrol company is an important aspect of our cooperation and we are thankful to the Romanian government for its constructive position," Nazarbayev continued. Victor Ponta thanked for the meeting and said his negotiations in Kazakhstan were fruitful. He expressed hope that his visit would serve to boost cooperation in a whole range of areas.
