Reprinting Kazakhstan's new 20,000-tenge bills requires $16 million

To have the new 20-thousand tenge bills reprinted to incorporate the signature of the recently appointed Central Bank Governor Kairat Kelimbetov will cost over $16 million, KazTag Agency reports, citing the ex Governor Gregory Marchenko. “Should the new Governor want to integrate his signature into the 20-thousand tenge bills’ design, it would cost around $16 million (…) During my tenure as a Governor I didn’t care too much about signatures. It’s up to the new Governor to take the ultimate decision”, Mr. Marchenko told at a press-conference to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the tenge, the Kazakh national currency. Mr. Marchenko elaborated that the new tenge bills were to be offered for circulation today. However beautiful the bill is, the money hasn’t been offered for circulation today. It will be a pity if they are offered later”, he added. Earlier the country’s media reported that the new tenge bill would bear the signature of Gregory Marchenko. The new bill was supposed to be issued November 15 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the tenge. The bills have already been printed, with most part of them being ready to be offered for circulation. Kazakhstan adopted its national currency, the tenge, on November 15, 1993.
