Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Nazarbayev have had a telephone discussion of the situation in south-east Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia, Tengrinews reports citing the press services of both presidents.

Akorda, the press service of the Kazakh leader, informs that the conversation was held on 13 August. “During the conversation the two leaders discussed Western sanctions against Russia and retaliatory measures of the Russian Federation and their possible impact,” it states.

The crisis in Ukraine was the other topic of the discussion. Notably, “the presidents confirmed of a high probability of a meeting of the heads of the Customs Union member states and Ukraine in the third decade of August this year, following the proposal of President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.”

In addition, it was noted that Putin spoke to Nazarbayev about the outcomes of his meeting with the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, in particular about their positions on the Nagorno-Karabach issue.

Bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia was also deliberated.

On its part, the Kremlin press service said that the topic of discussion was cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union, including measures to prevent unauthorized supplies via Kazakhstan and Belarus of goods from countries subject to the Russian sanctions.

“The heads of state also exchanged views on possible scenarios for international efforts to bring about a swift peaceful settlement to the internal political crisis in Ukraine. The three leaders expressed their serious concern over the grave humanitarian consequences of the military operations the Kiev authorities are pursuing in southeast Ukraine,” Kremlin notes.
