The planned shift to the Latin alphabet will contribute to popularity of Kazakh language, according to Erlan Karin, spokesman of the Nur Otan ruling party. “The planned shift to the Latin alphabet will not only make the language more popular, but will also help transcend the borders (…) now exchange of information with Kazakh communities living outside Kazakhstan is hampered [as the Kazakhs within Kazakhstan rely on the Cyrillic alphabet, whereas the Latin alphabet is used outside Kazakhstan]”, Mr. Karin said. According to him, when transferred to the Latin alphabet, Kazakh language will expand its audience worldwide, reaching out to Kazakhs living in Turkey, China and other countries. “It’s not the first time the issue has been raised (…) We used to debate over the pros and cons, now we will be focused on working out specific solutions. Head of State in his latest State of the Union Address set the task of having the language shifted to the Latin alphabet by 2025. It doesn’t mean we may postpone it till 2025. This specific date has been voiced so that we could start the prep works today”, he said. According to him, a special working group is to be formed shortly to gather suggestions and recommendations and outline a plan of further actions, including development of a new font and rules of its use. Tengrinews.kz reported earlier that when speaking at a solemn meeting to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence December 14, President Nursultan Nazarbayev tasked the Government to start prep works to transit to the Latin alphabet by 2025.
