Kazakhstan will seek to unlock the potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States during its 2015 chairmanship, Tengrinews reports citing 24.kz TV channel that streamed the October 10 meeting of the the Council of Heads of States of the CIS in Minsk, Belarus.

He stressed that during its chairmanship Kazakhstan would work based on the principles of continuity. 

“In the 2015 chairman of all the statutory bodies of the CIS, Kazakhstan will be preparing for the next meeting of the Council. We agreed to hold it in Astana. Kazakhstan considers CIS a one of a kind political platform that unites post-Soviet countries. It is paramount in our region. It is also the best platform for solving the pressing issues, holding discussions and exchanging views. And our chairmanship will seek to further unlock the Commonwealth’s potential,” Kazakh President said in his remarks at the meeting.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev spoke about the priorities of Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the organisation.

“Our key priorities are to strengthen mutual trust and understanding within the CIS, promote the initiatives aimed at supporting stability and security within the CIS. It is important to increase the role of the Commonwealth in adressing urgent issues related to cooperation between our countries in a multilateral framework. Another important area of our work is to expand trade and economic cooperation, which includes expanding the Free Trade Agreement. Steps will be taken to enhance collaboration in industry, energy, transport, agriculture and other areas,” the President of Kazakhstan said. 

The Kazakh President emphasized the need to enhance cultural and humanitarian ties and cooperation in the field of science, education, sport, tourism and youth policy.

“Another key point is our joint celebration of the 70th anniversary of the World War II Victory Day. This is our common history, and we must hold the celebrations of the anniversary of the Victory at a descent level. We need to pay tribute to the victims and veterans that are still alive,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

The Kazakh President expressed gratitude to President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko for the effective chairmanship in 2013-2014.

Finishing his speech, Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed the need to develop a concept for further development of the CIS in the run-up to the 25th anniversary of the organization.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin, in his turn, expressed confidence in Kazakhstan's effective presidency in the organization. "Our common task is to preserve and develop the CIS’ constructive potential, as our colleagues have said too today, and make sure that each CIS country reaps practical benefits from our multilateral cooperation. I am sure that Kazakhstan, the next presiding country, will work in this direction. Mr. Nazarbayev, we, for our part, will support you in every way we can and will help our Kazakhstani friends," Vladimir Putin is quoted as saying by kremlin.ru.

The next summit will be held in Astana in September-October, 2015.
