Kazakhstan supports Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Minister for Economic Integration Zhanar Aitzhanova. “We support it. Of course, we support it, if this is the political will of the Armenian government. There are joining procedures and they will have to be followed,” she said. According to her, Armenia always takes part in high level meetings of the Eurasian Economic Commission as an observer. “Their legislation meets the requirements. Should there be any incompliances, they will need to amend them to become a member of the Customs Union. But that will be the decision for the presidents of the Customs Union member-countries to make. I think that Kazakhstan’s position will be expressed at a high political level. The Customs Union is open for new members,” she stressed. Armenia is already a member of the WTO (World Trade Organizations), Aitzhanova pointed out. “There are also certain procedures and I think that everything will be done in line with the procedures,” the Minister stressed. Armenia expressed its intention to enter the Customs Union yesterday on September 3. Besides, it plans to take part in establishment of the Eurasian Economic Council. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the decision and expressed readiness to facilitate this process. “Armenia's joining the Eurasian integration structures will boost economic cooperation" in the region, he said. The Customs Union provides for establishment of a common customs territory with no customs duties and economic restrictions, except for special protective, anti-dumping and compensation measures. The Customs Union members currently include Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia. Ukraine has also been invited to become a member of the Custom's Union. Kiev has the observer status in the Customs Union but its official position is that the country is not ready for full membership in the organization.
