Kazakhstan is ready to double the trade and economic turnover with Latvia, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Serik Akhmetov. “We have the highest trade and economic turnover among the Baltic states with Latvia: this is at around $350 million. Of course, this is not the limit for us. With the potential and capacities of our countries we can double it or even more the that,” Akhmetov said at Kazakhstan-Latvian business forum in Astana. According to him, there are currently 135 joint companies working in Kazakhstan and the work on attraction of investments and business development is underway. “Traditionally Latvia is open for new technologies and there is a capacity to apply the new technologies transfer that is well established in Latvia. We are comprehensively working on our investment climate. We are open to business ideas and investments that will help us produce highly-competitive products. We are located far away from each other but I think that this will not be a big problem for expansion of the economic, trade and business relations. Tourism and education is another sector we could cooperate in. We should open up to each other via tourism and education. That’s why I invite the businesses to cooperate and the governments of our countries will create the conditions for that,” Akhmetov said. President of Latvia Andris Berzins said that Kazakhstan and Latvia had strong ties that were important for their further cooperation. “Your country is the biggest trade and economic partner in Central Asia. Our delegation is mainly made of the companies that have not worked with your country before. We will support and solve all the arising problems at the government level,” Berzins said.
