Japan has officially confirmed participation in the upcoming EXPO-2017 in Astana, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev assigned as the commissioner of the EXPO-2017 travelled to Japan with an official two-day visit. During his visit, Zhoshybayev met with Japan’s Vice Minister of Economy Norihiko Ishiguro. Ishiguro officially confirmed Japan’s participation in the EXPO-2017 along with the country’s largest corporations Toyota and Mitsubishi.

During the meeting Zhoshybayev and Ishiguro discussed development of trade and economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and Japan and preparations for the EU-Japan Joint Customs Cooperation Committee in Tokyo in 2015. Cooperation in attracting corporate participants to the EXPO-2017 was also on the meeting's agenda. In particular Zhoshybayev and Ishiguro stressed the importance of attracting participants from energy, machine building and technological sectors. According to Zhoshybayev, the EXPO-2017 presents an ideal platform for presentation of Kazakhstan’s scientific potential in renewable energy. Kazakhstan also hopes for the international exposition to influence the development of transnational partnership in renewable energy.

During the two-day visit to Japan, Zhoshybayev had a number of meetings. Zhoshybayev met with his counterpart from Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Takashi Uto. The Kazakhstani Vice-Minister stressed the high level of economic, trade and investment cooperation between Kazakhstan and Japan. He also emphasized the relevance of organizing an official visit of Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe to Kazakhstan in 2015 to strengthen mutual cooperation. Takashi Uto received President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s official letter to Shinzo Abe concerning support to Kazakhstan’s bid for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for 2017-2018.

Later, Zhoshybayev discussed Kazakhstan’s tourism potential with Tatsuro Nakamura, President of Japan Association of Travel Agents. They agreed to promote Kazakhstan and the country’s historical and cultural heritage of Silk Road for tourists in Japan. Nakamura said that Kazakhstan was included into the list of highly recommended destinations for Japanese tourist. The Head of the Association expressed hope that Kazakhstan would introduce a visa free entrance regime for Japanese citizens. This, according to Nakamura, would increase the number of Japanese tourists in Kazakhstan, especially in the wake of the EXPO-2017.

The Kazakhstani delegation was welcomed by Vice Chairman of Nippon Keidanren Norio Sasaki at Japan Business Federation. According to Sasaki, Japan’s hi-tech companies will participate in the EXPO-2017 to present their best developments in Astana.

As part of the official visit to Japan, the delegation from Kazakhstan organized a presentation for Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and other Japanese institutions responsible for organising the Japanese pavilion at the EXPO-2017. The day before the arrival of the Kazakhstani delegation, the Embassy of Kazakhstan and Tokyo’s International Airport organized screening of a video about Kazakhstan and the upcoming EXPO-2017 in two terminals.
