Alatau Park of Innovative Technologies located near Almaty is expecting to receive $300 million worth of new investments for its development, Deputy Prime-Minister, Minister of Industry and New Technologies of Kazakhstan Asset Issekeshev told Tengrinews. "The total amount of the scheduled investments makes 46 billion tenge ($300 million)," Asset Issekeshev said, presenting the draft law called Innovative Cluster: Park of Innovative Technologies in the Majilis (Lower Chamber of the Parliament). According to him, 152 companies are operating in the frames of the Almaty’s technology park. 70% of them are working on IT project. 10% out of the 152 companies are using foreign capital. "This is a fairly complicated project. Leading universities of Almaty will be joining the technology park. We don't need to construct any new venues, they have their venues in the city already. Certainly, we are not talking about allowing some random universities in, only the most prestigious ones like the Kazakh-British Technical University and Polytechnic University and perhaps some American institute," he added. He reminded that in 2010 the President of Kazakhstan gave a range of instructions that helped improve the Technopark of Almaty. Since 2011 the number of the park's participants has increased and more than thousand jobs were created. "Since 2010 these companies, despite the (tax) benefits, generated more than 3 billion tenge ($19.5 million) in taxes for the state budget," Issekeshev said. "The first stage of the Park's construction has been completed successful, all the constructed space is already occupied," he said, adding that the second stage construction had begun. Speaking about new developments proposed in the draft law he assured that "the participating companies will retain their tax and customs preferences." "There will be a supervisory board led by the Kazakhstan President, And an Autonomous Cluster Foundation that will function as the management company of the cluster," Minister Issekeshev said. "Today we need to join the efforts of our science, industry and businesses to make innovations the cornerstone of all the new industrial enterprises. And this draft law is another instrument of government support to innovative technologies in Kazakhstan," Majilis speaker Nurlan Nigmatulin stressed. Last week President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said in his annual State-of-the-Nation Address that technoparks had to step up their work, especially those located in large urban agglomerations like Astana and Almaty. "The first intellectual-and-innovative cluster of Astana is successfully operating on the basis of the Nazarbayev University. And there is Alatau IT Park in Almaty. It is important to wind ways to stimulate more large Kazakhstan companies to bring their production outlets to these technology parks,” he added. By Baubek Konyrov
