Yevgeniy Zhovtis, a prominent human rights campaigner and ex Head of Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law, sentenced in 2009 to 4 years in prison for manslaughter in a lethal car accident, has been released from a penal settlement today under a recent amnesty.
“For the past 2.5 years I have changed neither my views, nor my attitudes towards what is happening in our country and in other parts of the world. I am going to further stand on my vision of freedom and justice”, KazTag Agency reports, citing Mr. Zhovtis as saying.
According to him, before getting back to active work, he needs to be more fully aware of what is going on in the country.
“At the same time the penal settlement is not a health resort. It will take me some time to restore my health”, he said.
The human rights campaigner once again expressed his sorrow to the mother of the deceased Kanat Moldabayev and thanked her “for the words of forgiveness that are very precious to me”.
Mr. Zhovtis also expressed his gratitude to his colleagues, reps of some political parties, journalists and other people who have been rendering their support to him throughout the whole period.
