February 13, 2012 President Nursultan Nazarbayev discussed the current situation in Syria with UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing the official website of President Nazarbayev who is on a working visit to the UAE. Nursultan Nazarbayev and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan agreed that diplomatic measures are instrumental in Syria to stabilize the situation and prevent confrontation. Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed that Kazakhstan speaks in favor of soonest normalization of the situation around Iran and Syria and will be working towards that within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, his Press Service reported. The sides pointed to the high potential to be unleashed in the trade and economic and investments realms. Head of Kazakhstan stressed that it has been 20 years since the two nations established diplomatic ties. One of the tangible results of recent cooperation is the intergovernmental agreement on visa-free travelling for holders of diplomatic passports. The sides agreed that the 5th sitting of the Kazakh-UAE intergovernmental committee held in November 2011 in Abu Dhabi had been quite a success. The 6th sitting is to be held in Kazakhstan in the H2 2012. “During the talks the sides agreed it was necessary to sign within reasonably shortest time agreements on cooperation in customs procedures, support to and mutual protection of investments, as well as to hold another round of talks with regards to the draft agreement on flights between Kazakhstan and the UAE”, President Nazarbayev’s Press Service reports. The sides expressed satisfaction with the works on large-scaled investment projects, including Abu Dhabi Plaza which is a major mixed-use development in Astana, comprising of a retail podium, integrated plaza, residential apartments, international grade office accommodation, and a hotel quarter. A railway is likely to link it to the international airport of Astana. The project was estimated at over $ 1 billion. President Nazarbayev expressed hope the project would be implemented within the timeframe defined in the intergovernmental agreement. Besides, the two counterparts commended the operation of Al Hilal Islamic Bank in Kazakhstan. The Bank is a 100% subsidiary of Al Hilal Bank, UAE, and the first Islamic bank in Kazakhstan and CIS countries. First Islamic banking license was obtained on 17th of March, 2010. The Bank now seeks to open its second branch in Shymkent in the South of Kazakhstan. Another successful project is Al Falah Fund jointly launched by Abu Dhabi government-owned International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) and Kazakhstan Government. UAE President stressed his nation is ready to expand cooperation in the O&G sector and petrochemistry. Besides, “given the bumper grain harvest in Kazakhstan, the UAE are willing to consider importing grain from Kazakhstan”. Nursultan Nazarbayev briefed his counterpart that Kazakhstan had submitted its bid for hosting the EXPO in 2017. “UAE’s support to Astana’s bid would be a great contribution to the bilateral cooperation”, the Press Service quoted President Nazarbayev as saying. Head of Kazakhstan expressed his keen interest to the Masdar City Project. Masdar is a project in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. Its core is a planned city, which is being built by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, with the majority of seed capital provided by the government of Abu Dhabi.Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners, the city will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology. The city is being constructed 17 kilometres east-south-east of the city of Abu Dhabi, beside Abu Dhabi International Airport. Masdar Institute announced its readiness to enroll 15 post-graduate students from Kazakhstan on a free-of-charge basis. President Nazarbayev also met General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to discuss further expansion of bilateral cooperation in a number of realms.
