Kazakhstan suggested three principles of nuclear security, Tengrinews.kz journalist reports from the High-Level meeting during the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. First of all, Nursultan Nazarbayev talked about the necessity to improve global mechanisms of managing nuclear energy development processes. “It is necessary to create more effective security system for nuclear facilities in the world. It is extremely important to work out very strict unified international standards and security criteria for nuclear facilities. No nuclear power station in the world should be allowed to operate without strict compliance with such standards. The suggestion is to perform regular stress-tests of nuclear power stations' control systems under the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) involving independent experts,” Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said. The second principle calls for the necessity of clearly universally recognized mechanisms of nuclear emergency and crisis response. “Natural disasters are becoming the most frequent reasons for major technogenic catastrophes in the world. It will be practical to implement a global system of monitoring of natural anthropogenic processes. This requires developing crisis response scenarios for each region of the world, considering local landscape, logistics, demographic map,” the President said. The third principle is about the necessity to provide global community with immediate information on even the smallest incidents at the nuclear facilities. “Considering global radio-phobia, it is very important to enhance population's trust to nuclear energy based on truthful and realistic information. Nuclear energy has to be based on the old legal principle of telling the the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.
