Women make up 70% of the unemployed in Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing Amanzhol Abdrakhmanov, Astana Employment Centre director as saying during 2012 City Job Fair. “Women are looking for a job more frequently than men. Frankly speaking, women unemployment prevails now. About 60-70% of women approached us. There are fewer men. According to Alma Altybayeva, Employment and Social Program Department head of Astana Akimat (municipal authorities), the city lack blue collar workers and all kinds of technician, such as concrete workers, artificers, plumbers, bus and truck drivers. Communication specialists, medical nurses and preschool teachers are in great demand as well. “About 9800 students will graduate from universities this year, 3900 of them are economists and 2500 are lawyers. We are expecting that 4500 of them will join the ranks of the unemployed. That’s why we are trying to direct young people so that they can choose the right profession today and not stay without a job tomorrow,” Altybayeva said.
