There will be 2 million more people living in Kazakhstan by 2020, Tengrinews.kz reports citing chairman of Kazakhstan Statistics Agency Alikhan Smailov as saying at the government meeting in the Majilis, the lower chamber of the Parliament. "We think that it the annual growth of 200 thousand people persists, the population will reach 18.7 million people by 2020," Smailov said about the demographic situation in Kazakhstan. According to Smailov, Kazakhstan's population has undergone a lot of transformations in the 20 years of Independence. "You know that the government adopted inventive measures to stimulate birth and stepped up healthcare to reduce mortality. Regulation of migration flows, as well as annual increases of quotas for Oralmans (ethnic Kazakhs coming back to Kazakhstan) are also in place. As a result of these steps our population made 16.7 million people as of January 1, 2012. It grew 10.6 percent, or by 1.8 million people, compared to 2000. This increase was achieved mainly through natural increase of the population," head of the Statistics Agency said.
