International expedition started the last trip to K2. Today, August 16, the alpinists reached the first camp at 5,300 meters, Kazakhstan alpinist Maksut Zhumayev told Tengrinews.kz. “The final trip to Chogori started today at 8 a.m. It was snowing all the time. We had to move slowly, as visibility was 100 meters. The trip was complicated because of deep snow, about 30 cm. We are a bit tired and having a rest now. As per the forecasts, the snow should stop at night. Thus, tomorrow we will move to the second camp in good weather,” the alpinist shared the details of the final trip’s first day. The start of the final trip coincided with the birthday of another Kazakhstan alpinist, Vassiliy Pivtsov. This is not the first time he celebrates his birthday on Chogori. “In 2007 we were setting in the forth camp at 8,000 meters on Vassiliy’s birthday,” Zhumayev said. During the last trip the expedition’s participants will spend four nights at 5,300, 6,600, 7,100 and 8,000 meters and then try to reach the mount’s top at 8,611 meters. The international expedition to K2 includes Maksut Zhumayev and Vassiliy Pivtsov from Kazakhstan, Gerlinda Kaltenbrunner from Austria, Ralf Dujmovits from Germany, Darek Zaluski from Poland and Tommy Heinrich from Argentina. Chogori is located in the Karakorum mountain system in Kashmir province at the territory of Pakistan. Its height is 8,611 meters.
