Finance Minister on role of state-run enterprises in Kazakhstan’s economy

According to Ms. Yertlessova, there is no official data on the share of state-owned enterprises in the country’s GDP. Agreeing with her, the country’s Finance Minister said that “according to estimates, the share of government-owned enterprises stands at around 40% (…) to streamline the role of the Government in the economy, national companies are now selling their non-core assets”.

“The main aim of privatization efforts is to reduce the share of the government in the economy (…) out of 200 000 enterprises based in Kazakhstan, government-owned businesses make up around 9 000 (…) there are many state-run enterprises in the housing management and utilities (…) out of the 9 000 around 861 are to be privatized shortly, with another 300 enterprises to be closed down”, the Minister said.
