Accession into the WTO is of strategic importance for Kazakhstan, President Nazarbayev stated when speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum June 18. “Accession into the WTO is beneficial and strategically important for Kazakhstan despite the country’s membership in the Customs Union. (…) Kazakhstan is eager to be a full-fledged member of the Organization. We are looking forward to completing the accession process and working towards strengthening of the Organization’s role”. “At the same time we have to bear in mind that exports of 34 most developed countries that are home to 15% of the global population make up over half (52.3%) of the global exports (…) 150 developing nations with the rest 85% of the global population account for merely a third of the global exports. One reason for that is inequality of some agreements (…)”, President Nazarbayev said. “Let’s take agriculture. It is one of the most vulnerable sectors in terms of competitiveness not only for Kazakhstan, but also for many other emerging nations. It is of importance to us to retain state support to this sector. Given the current global conditions, the Customs Union member states should accept essential WTO agreements, excepting the so-called WTO plus”, the President said. According to President Nazarbayev, it is crucial for the Customs Union member states to develop concerted principles of foreign trade both inside the Union’s territory and outside.
