June 10 Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev flew in a helicopter over the green zone surrounding Astana, Tengrinews.kz reports. “The President flew over the specially planted forest area forming the green belt around Astana. The total area of the belt is 16,584 hectares, including 11,502 hectares covered with forests containing 9.6 million trees and 1.9 million bushes,” the city administration’s press-service says. The President raised the issue of the green area around Astana one week ago at the meeting on further development of Astana. “I instructed to create a green belt around Astana and inside the city. Why do you think I want to have every square meter in the city covered with grass? Do you feel that there is no dust anymore? All the dust was generaded in the steppes surrounding the city. This has to be taken care of. We have produced first good results: 55 thousand hectares of forests have been planted around the city,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said on June 3. Zhassyl Aimak state company dealing with planting of the green area around Astana, owns eight forestries. Their total area is 66,151 hectares. As per the company, the forests are created in harsh soil and climatic conditions of the steppes zone in two stages: planting of seedlings of drought-resistant and salt-resistant bushes and trees (maple, birch, elm, currant and Juneberry) and planting of more valuable trees (Scotch pine, Siberian larch, Siberian spruce, small-leaved linden and English oak). Astana green area has Siberian pea-trees, maples, current bushes, apple trees, poplars, willows and many other trees. One of the forestries, Ak Kaiyn has purchased a drop irrigation system this year. The plan is that forest plantation works will be continued in the area of 10 thousand hectares in 2012-2013 and starting from 2014 planting of a forest belt around Astana 5 km from the city border is sheduled to begin. As per Zhassyl Aimak, the financing needed for 2012-2014 exceeds 6 billion tenge ($41 million). By Assel Satayeva
