Kazakhstan foundation Wikibilim was tagged Global Wikipedian-2011 and won a grant of Jimmy Wales, a co-founder of Wikipedia, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the foundation's press-service.
Wikibilim received these awards after Wikimania-2011 international conference held in Haifa on August 4-7. Around 700 people from 56 countries took part in the event.
«Kazakh Wikipedia is the most successful project of the language section development implemented in the last years. We are interested in promoting the experience of Kazakh Wikipedia, as an example for those who are looking for opportunities to develop knowledge and culture in their language,” Wales said.
According to the foundation's message, the number of Wikipedia articles in Kazakh language increased from 7 to 70 thousand in three months and the number of active editors grew from 4 to 231.
Jimmy also announced the creation of an annual award—Global Wikipedian of the Year. This was given to Rauan Kenzhekhanuly of Kazakh Wikipedia and consisted of a $5,000 award to Wikibilim, the chapter in Kazakhstan, to pay travel expenses to Wikimania next year. This would be presented to Kezhekhanuly at a ceremony in Kazakhstan with the country's prime minister Karim Massimov.
