Kazakhstan floated its first locally-made drilling rig, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of KAZENERGY Association. "To perform the obligations on construction of wells under Zhambyl field development project and because of the deficit of drilling capacities KazMunaiGas, along with Korean National Oil Consortium (KNOC), completed manufacturing of a submersible drilling barge Caspian Explorer and it was officially floated on June 14. This is the first time such rig has been manufactured at the territory of Kazakhstan," the press-service cites deputy chairman of KazMunaiGas on Geology and Promising Projects Kurmangazy Iskaziyev as saying. Besides construction of the submersible drilling barge, the company pointed out another promising project: construction of C-class self-lifting floating drill rig as a main option for provision of the sea projects in Kazakhstan's sector of the Caspian Sea with drilling capacities in 2015 and later. In this project KazMunaiGas is open for negotiations and further cooperation with foreign partners, the company states. "Kazakhstan, being one of the major oil-producing countries of the Caspian region, is now rapidly becoming one of the major oil producers and exporters in the world. Kazakhstan's proved recoverable reserves make 5 billion tons of oil and 3 trillion cubic meters of gas. Prospect and geological resources make 17 billion tons with a majority of them concentrated in the Pre-Caspian depression, including the water area of the North Caspian Sea," Kurmangazy Iskaziyev told about the company's principles of aggressive geological research and expansion of the business' geography, as well as effective implementation of the projects. According to him, an audit of resources was made in KazMunaiGas group of companies in 2011 for the first time. Based on the audit independent international audit company Gaffney, Cline & Associates made an estimation of the prospect resources of KazMunaiGas in Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea. The resource potential of this sector, exclusive of the reserves of the North-Caspian project, is 2.288 million tons under SPE international standards. "Besides the standard procedures on ensuring environmental protection, KazMunaiGas is forming up an ecological response base to ensure effective elimination of 1 and 2-level oil spills and commissioning of the equipment in case of 3-level spills," Iskaziyev stated.
