Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan to construct underwater segment of TASIM

Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement to construct the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) underwater segment, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti.


Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement to construct the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) underwater segment, Tengrinews reports citing RIA Novosti.

The construction works, according to the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan Ali Abbasov, could start in 2015.

“The contract with Kazakhstan will be signed in the first half of the year, while the construction works will begin in the end of the year,” Abbasov said.

TASIM initiated in 2011 in Baku aims to extend the transnational fiber-optic backbone from Frankfurt to Hong Kong, two largest information exchange centers of Europe and Asia. The transit route will pass from China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey to Germany. In addition, it is planned to construct an alterative route passing through Russia, Ukraine and Poland.

At the moment, the TASIM project is supported by Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan International Relations and Accounting Center), China (China Telcom Global Limited), Kazakhstan (“Kaztranscom” JSC), Russia (“Rostelecom” Ojsc Long-Distance and International Telecommunications) and Turkey (“Türk Telekomünikasyon” A.Ş).

According to the official website of the project, TASIM “will help create open information society in the region increase connectivity and develop e-services, thus, promoting industrial development, diversification of economy and competiveness”.
