The officials have commented the situation around the paid parking lots in Almaty. The parkomats are currently working in a test mode and will start operating in one month, Tengrinews reports citing head of natural resources department Altai Rakhimbetov as saying. “This is a new system for Kazakhstan and certification of the equipment has taken some time. But all the issues have been solved and all the checks have been passed. Besides the parking lot that we have presented, there are 40 lots under construction right now. They will be operating in a month,” Rakhimbetov said. According to deputy Akim (Vice-Mayor) of Almaty Yerbol Shormanov, the city's business community is watching this situation very closely. But none of the have risked to tap into this business so far. “They don’t want to take the risk,” Shormanov said. “This is understandable, as the project is new for us. Nobody knows how it goes; renting the land and paying money for it is a liability. However, the project should be good in terms of releasing the city from the chaotic parking, etc.” The project’s estimated payoff is around 12 percent, Shormanov noted. The first parking lots will be installed in two best regions of Almaty for the meantime: Medeu and Almaly regions. The plan is to cover the whole city in future. The city administration allotted 100 land lots for construction of the paid parking lots. They will be operating from 08:00 a.m. to 07:00 p.m. One hour of parking will cost 100 tenge ($0.7) and free of charge during the night, regardless of the city's region. The operators of the parking lots will not bear any responsibility for the parked cars. But the lots will be equipped with surveillance cameras. The records of the video cameras will be stored at the central server and the car owner will be able to apply to the Interior Department to get access to the records in case of need.
