Almost a half of HIV positive respondents were fired, Tengrinews.kz reports. And almost one third of the respondents were fired straight after their employers have learned about their status. These are KZ HIV Stigma Index results. The survey was conducted as part of a campaign dedicated to the World AIDS Day. The National Center on Prevention and Fight against AIDS conducts the campaign called: “Moving to Zero. Zero HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero deaths caused by AIDS.” Kostanay holds the first place by discrimination of HIV positive people. 52% of HIV positive respondents experienced discrimination in this city in one way or other. Almaty is second with 48% and Pavlodar is third with 26%. Meanwhile 36% of respondents answered that they haven't experienced any forms of discrimination when other people learned about their status. “Stigma (label) is appearing because most of HIV positive people are injection drug addicts, prostitutes and gay men. The society is extremely negative about these groups of people. That's why all HIV positive people are perceived unfavorably,” experts say.
