Stone dam protects Astana from floods: Emergency Situations Minister

A stone dam protects Kazakhstan capital Astana from the possible floods, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Bozhko. "The stone dam we have erected three years ago will protect the city. The total volume of intercepted water is 450 million cubic meters. I think that Astana will be ready to face the possible catastrophic floods. The history has it that Tselinograd (now Astana) was flooded in 1949 and 1951, so we have protected Astana 100 percent," Bozhko said on the sidelines of the government meeting. This year Astana Maslikhat (local executive body) has increased the anti-flood budget 15-fold. By Gulnara Zhandagulova
