Chairman of Kazakhstan's state atomic company dies

The head of KazAtomProm Nurlan Kapparov has died today of a heart attack in Beijing, four days before his 45th birthday, Tengrinews reports citing IA Novosti-Kazakhstan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has officially confirmed Kapparov’s death.

"Chairman of the Board of National Atomic Company Kazatomprom Nurlan Kapparov died on March 26 in China at 14:30 Beijing time. Cardiac arrest was the cause of death. We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kapparov. Kazakhstan Embassy in China is carrying out all the necessary procedures to transport his body back home," the Ministry said.

Kapparov was born on March 30, 1970. He graduated from Almaty Institute of Technology and had a Master's degree in public administration.

Kapparov was among the 50 richest people in Kazakhstan. He is the founder and owner of Lancaster Group Kazakhstan. His fortune, according to Forbes, is estimated at $120 million.

Over the years he served as president of Accent corporation, as president of KazTransOil and KazakhOil national companies, as well as Vice-Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Kazakhstan.

From 2001 to 2003 he was in the US, studying public administration at the Kennedy School at Harvard University, from 2003 to 2011 he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lancaster Group Kazakhstan, and from January 2012 as Minister of Environment. He was appointed chairman of KazAtomProm in August 2014.
