An investigation has started at ArcelorMittal Aktau plant where the recent fire claimed one person’s life and injured two other employees, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the plant’s press-service.

The fire started at ArcelorMittal Aktau plant during repair works in one of the transformer substations on February 22. The fire area made 15 square meters. Three employees were injured in the tragic accident. One of them died in intensive care shortly after. According to the preliminary version, a short circuit caused the fire.

On February 27 a state commission consisting of representatives of the Emergency Situations Department, the Department of Labor and Social Protection and ArcelorMittal Aktau have started investigating the causes and circumstances of the accident. The restoration works at the burnt facility will start upon completion of the investigation that may take up to 10 days. The accident caused suspension of one of the plants laboratories and its pipe coating line. Other plant’s divisions, including pipe production line are operating normally.

“This is the first accident in our company in almost 7 years of work. Unfortunately, it claimed the life of our employee Yerik Khodzhalepessov. We share the grief and sorrow and express sincere condolences to his family,” Director General of ArcelorMittal Aktau Zhenis Utegenov said. He added that the family of the electrician will received 2.5 million tenge ($16.7 thousand) in financial aide.

Another fire victim is currently in the hospital. The third one was discharged from the hospital after receiving some medical aid the same day.
