66% of entrants have failed the Complex Testing of Entrants (CTE) held in Kazakhstan on July 19-22, 2014, Tengrinews reports referring to Deputy Minister of Education Tarik Balykbayev.

66% of entrants have failed the Complex Testing of Entrants (CTE) held in Kazakhstan on July 19-22, 2014, Tengrinews reports referring to Deputy Minister of Education Tarik Balykbayev.

In Kazakhstan the Complex Testing is held for this those who want to enter a university, but didn't go to high school or failed the high school finals (the National Testing). Those who went to college or a vocational school instead of high school or after graduating from high school, international exchange students and those who studied abroad also have to pass the test to become eligible to study in a Kazakh university.

The Complex Testing is held in the Kazakh or Russian languages (depending on the language of studying). It includes four subjects: Kazakh Language (for those who studied in Russian) or Russian Language (for those who studied in Kazakh), History of Kazakhstan, Math and one subject at the entrant's choice. The choice subject should match the graduate's planned major.

The test lasts for 2.5 hours. The maximum score per subject is 25 points which brings the test's total to 100.

Tarik Balykbayev announced the results of the CTE at the briefing held today at the Central Communications Service headquarters.

"87,060 entrants applied for the test, and 84,490 of them turned up to take the test. 56,016 entrants - 66.29% - failed to overcome the 50 point threshold," the Deputy Minister said.

27 of those who failed the test appealed against the results, three of the appeals were granted, he added. Nine entrants scored 100 out of 100 points this year.

"Same as in the previous years, many entrants tried to cheat using cribs or forbidden devices, such as cell phones and calculators. Over 46,829 of those were confiscated during the test," he said.

144 people were caught taking the exam instead of someone else this year.

The entrants who passed the threshold can now apply for state scholarships and grants. Availability of grants depends of the number of points scored by the entrant, the university and the major he or she chooses.

Those who fail to quality for a scholarship, but overcame the 50-point threshold can still enter a university, but will have to pay their tuition fees.

70+ points in CTE are required to enter a national university of Kazakhstan - these are 9 largest universities of the country (2 in Astana and 7 in Almaty). 50 points are enough for all the other universities.
