Kazakhstan to switch to 12-year education in several steps

Detailed plan of switching to 12-year education has been developed in Kazakhstan, KazTAG reports citing Kazakhstan Prime-Minister Karim Massimov. “Detailed plan of switching to 12-year education has been developed in Kazakhstan. It sets timeframe for preparation of regulatory and methodic documents for the 12-year education process,” the message published on October 27 states. According to the message, Kazakhstan will fully switch to 12-year education model by 2020. The plan is that 2010-2014 will be a transition period, while the switch itself is scheduled for 2015/2016 school year. The standards will be gradually implemented in 2016-2020. The standards for first, fifth and eleventh grades will start to be implemented in 2015. Preparatory (experimental) work on switching to 12-year education is currently held in 104 Kazakhstan schools, including 45 schools in villages and 59 schools in cities. “According to the Ministry of Education and Science, main provisions of the General State Education Standards for 12-year education and standards for elementary education have been approved. The classes for 12-year curriculum have been developed. Books and teaching materials for 1-8 grades have been prepared,” the message states. 12-year education is used in 136 countries of the world, including Australia, Canada, the U.S., France, Japan and other countries included into the list of top 50 competitive countries. Post-Soviet countries that have switched to 12-year education model include Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Estonia.
