The August 3 quake of 6.1 magnitude occurred in Ludian county of South Western China, about 225 miles north-east of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province.

More than 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged in the quake zone in the southwestern province of Yunnan, China's official news agency Xinhua said.

Currently, a total of 7,000 people, including 5,000 soldiers, police and firefighters along with volunteers coming from different parts of China are helping eliminate the aftermath of the Sunday earthquake, AFP reports.

The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has sent a telegram of condolences to Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and China's President, over the earthquake, the presidential website reports.

The telegram says that Nursultan Nazarbayev and the people of Kazakhstan are deeply grieved by the news of the tragedy.

The President sent his deep condolences to China's President Xi Jinping and the families who lost their loved one in the quake.
