Muslim Umiryayev, Kazakhstan's Vice-Minister of Agriculture, has been arrested on bribery charges, Tengrinews reports according to an informed source in the General Prosecutor’s Office. "The Vice-Minister was arrested for receiving a $100 thousand bribe to help a company win a government procurement tender," the source said. "He is suspected of taken a bribe for awarding a public procurement contract in veterinary drugs. The paradox is that Umiryayev was not supervising the procurement of veterinary drugs or veterinary medicine. He was supervising crop farming and agriculture," the press-secretary of the Agriculture Minister of Kazakhstan Saken Kalkamanov said commenting on the arrest. The press-secretary confirmed that Umiryayev did not appear at work today. "Yes, he didn't came to work today, because he was arrested," he said. According to the Agency for Fighting Economic and Corruption Crimes (Financial Police) of Kazakhstan, the diplomat was arrested on December 21 on charges of getting a $100 thousand bribe from a businessman was awarding a public procurement contract. A criminal case has been initiated against him over bribe in an especially large scale. "The criminal case is being investigated and the bail hearing has been scheduled," the Financial Police said. Before his appointment as Vice-Minister of Agriculture in September 2011 Muslim Umiryayev, 39, used to be General Director of Russikie Fermy (Russian Farms) International Fund, Financial Director of Yuzhniy Tsentr (South Center) in Almaty, Director of the Board of Administrative Instructions of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan and the Government and deputy head of the Department of Presidential Affairs.
