Azamat Tazhayakov’s lawyers will appeal against the decision of the jury that found the Kazakhstani student guilty of obstructing justice in the Boston bombings case, Tengrinews reports citing the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan is keeping a close eye on our citizens Tazhayakov and Kadyrbayev’s trial. Kazakhstan’s consul in New York attended all the hearings as an observer. According to our consul in New York, Azamat Tazhayakov’s defense intends to appeal the decision of the jury that found him guilty of obstructing justice,” the press secretary of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nurzhan Aitmakhanov said.

Tazhayakov’s lawyer must lodge an appeal before August 27. The deadline for the response to the appeal is September 22.

Aitmakhanov added that international agreements prevented diplomats from interfere with lawsuits, that is why they would have to wait for a response to the appeal. "Only after the response to appeal is issued, the Ministry will try to assist Tazhayakov," he said.

However, Aitmakhanov did not elaborate on what kind of assistance Tazhayakov would receive from the Ministry.

Tazhayakov is facing up to 20 years in prison. The sentence is due October 16.

His friend Dias Kadyrbayev will face the trial in September.
