A court hearing on Valeriy Tolmachev from Kazakhstan arrested in Italy for an attempt to hijack a plane is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry. As per the Ministry, the proceedings have been delayed but will take place on Tuesday, April 26. Preliminary charges are going to be brought against Tolmachev at the hearing. Decision on pretrial restrictions should also be made. It is not yet known whether any representatives of Kazakhstan will be present at the sitting. The Ministry has not confirmed the information that Tolmachev is an adviser to Kazakhstan's delegation at UNESCO. It refuses to make any comments before the court sitting. Tolmachev has been refusing to make any statements whatsoever to the Italian police or explain the reasons behind his attempt to hijack the plane. He kept silent during the police questioning. Valeriy Tolmachev attempted to hijack a Paris-Rome Alitalia flight and divert it to Tripoli, Libya by threatening a flight attendant late on Sunday evening. He said he wanted to hijack the plane with 131 passengers on board and land it in the Libyan capital. He was wrestled away from the attendant by passengers and given a sedative. The flight continued safely, none of the passengers were hurt. The flight arrived to Rome's Fiumicino airport and the “agitated” passenger was handed over to police.
