The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has discussed job cuts at the ArcelorMittal Temirtau plant with Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, the Chairman and CEO of ArcelorMittal Company, Tengrinews reports citing the official website of the president. During the meeting the President of Kazakhstan and Lakshmi Mittal discussed the ongoing work of ArcelorMittal in Kazakhstan. They also touched on the concerns related to operation of the company’s branches -- ArcelorMittal Temirtau and ArcelorMittal Aktau -- in Kazakhstan, including on the decrease of production volumes and axing of jobs. Nursultan Nazarbayev and the Chairman of ArcelorMittal discussed the company's contribution into development of Kazakhstan's metallurgy, ArcelorMittal Temirtau operations in general and implementation of several of its investment and social projects. The President stressed the importance of dealing with these issues and searching for solutions together with the Kazakhstan government. Earlier ArcelorMittal Temirtau declared its intention to cut 2,500 jobs in 2014. Viktor Schetinin, vice-chairman of Zhaktau steel workers union, said that scheduled shutdown of several no longer demanded units was the key reasons behind the personnel axing in ArcelorMittal Temirtau. "Several shops, that are technologically no longer needed, will be shut down. (...) However, these are not actual cuts: these 2,500 jobs will be outsourced," he pointed out.
