Oscar holder chairs Eurasia Film Fest jury in Almaty

New Zealand's film director and Oscar holder Jane Campion chairs the jury of the 9th International Film Festival Eurasia, Yermek Amanshayev, President of Kazakhfilm, Kazakhstan national film studio, told Tengrinews.kz. Jane Campion is the second out of four women ever nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Director and is also the first female filmmaker in the history to receive the Palme d'Or. The got it for directing the acclaimed The Piano film. "We were in talks with Jane Campion for almost four years. This year our program director Diana Ashimova finely met her in Berlin and said that she was the one who was in touch with her for three years. Jane was very please to meet her at last and said she would visit Kazakhstan this year because of our insistence and respect for her," the art director of the film festival Gulnara Abikeyeva shared. The jury also included Filipino film director Brillante Mendoza awarded with the Best Director for his Kinatay film at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, Spanish director, producer and actor Luis Minarro and famous American screenwriter David Franzoni. Franzoni's best known screenplay Gladiator won five Academy Awards at the 73rd Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. Kazakhstan film director Emir Baigazin of Kazakhstan is the youngest member of the jury at the festival. His film Harmony Lessons won the Berlinale Silver Bear Award for the Artistic Achievement. It not the first time Baigazin is on the jury board, he was a member of the jury at the International Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland. Besides the international jury, prestigious cinema critics from FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) and NETPAC (The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) will be evaluating films at the festival. The competition program contains 12 feature length films: - Miele (Italy 2013), - Henri (France 2012), - My sisters (Germany 2013), - Wadjda (Saudi Arabia, Germany 2012), - Don't worry Sarah (Iran 2013), - Iloilo (Singapore 2013), - Cycle (Turkey 2012), - Shame (Russia 2013), - In Bloom (Georgia 2013), - Passion (Kyrgyzstan 2013), - Zarandud (Tajikistan 2013), and - Bauyr (Little Brother) by Kazkahstan director Serik Aprymov. The film was entered into the program of the Orizzonti (Horizons) section of the 70th Venice Film Festival. Besides the competition program, Central Asia Panorama, kinomost East and West, World Cinema Fund, Days of Russian Cinema, Special Event and Dynamic Kazakh Cinema out-of-competition sections will take place within the framework of the festival's traditional screenings. 10 films have been included into the Dynamic Kazakh Cinema section. The Kazakhstan film directors Darezhan Omirbayev and Erlan Nurmukhambetov, the director of the 9th Eurasia Firm Festival Serik Zhubandykov, the co-director of WCF (WorldCinemaFestival) Vincenzo Bugno and the art director of the festival Gulnara Abikeyeva will evaluate the movies in this section. The American producer Gianni Nunnari - 300, Alexander and Immortals - will give master-classes during the Eurasian Film Festival.
