Harmony Lessons by Emir Baigazin of Kazakhstan won the special jury prize for the Best Filmmaker’s Debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Tengrinews.kz reports referring to the press-service of KazakhFilm Studios. “Kazakhstan-made Harmony Lessons movie competed for the title of the Best Debut Film with 24 movies from different film categories. It was a fierce competition and we are happy that the international jury awarded us with the diploma. It was the first time the festival led by Robert de Niro awarded a Kazakhstan filmmaker with the prize,” Anna Kachko, the film producer, said. Village Voice magazine included Harmony Lessons into the list of Ten Films to See at the Fest before the opening of the festival. American website Twitch wrote: “Harmony Lessons is a beautifully designed and directed film, whose rigorously composed fixed-take compositions and symbolically allusive geometric patterns are as compelling as the narrative itself” and “the Harmony Lessons is filled with stylistic riches and sharp psychological acuity, and despite its somber subject matter, is not without a sense of humor. Director Emir Baigazin has undeniably announced himself as a filmmaker well worth following”. Australian movie The Rocket took the top honor of this year Tribeca Film Festival as the Best Feature Film. 10-y.o. actor starring in the film was awarded as The Best Actor. The Kill Team by Dan Krauss won in the Documentary category. Earlier Tengrinews.kz reported that Harmony Lessons won the Berlinale Silver Bear Award for the Artistic Achievement for its cinematographer Aziz Zhambakiyev and also got the prize of the Morgen Post newspaper.
