The lead soloists of Astana Opera ballet Madina Basbayeva and Tair Gatauov performed at the gala-concert Stars of 21st Century in France, Tengrinews reports citing the theater's press-service. The artists performed on September 20-22 in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, performing the pas de deux La fille mal gardée (The Wayward Daughter). This was the first time in 20 years when Kazakhstan ballet dancers participated in Stars of 21st Century. "We didn't expect to become the first participants to represent Asia. There are a lot of artists from Europe and America at the concert. Yuriy Vetrov of the Bolshoi Theater was the last person who participated in the event a quarter-century ago," Madina said. "The organizers of the gala decided to make it wider, to let each continent present one dance pair. We were the only soloists from the post-soviet space and we representing Kazakhstan and Astana Opera Theater. Our names were included in the repertoire of Champs-Élysées theater one year before the performance," Tair said. The dancers said that all the representatives of the French elite came to see the gala on the first day of the festival, the gala participants met with the audience after the performance. "People asked us about everything, they evaluated our dancing and admired at our classic ballet clothes, because the modern style ballet became tedious and West audience have not seen the white ballet tutu skirts for a long time," Madina shared. The Kazakhstan ballet dancers were the only ones who performed classic in the first two shows. "Classic repertoire was also represented by one pas de deux performed by Taras Domitro and Maria Kochetkova from San Francisco. And Madina and I presented two pas de deux. First of all not every dancer can do that, it requires strong will and good experience. We were ready from the beginning that it would be very hard, but still we could find the common ground with the audience. The difference between Kazakhstan and European audience is they applaud after the whole performance and we are used to hearing applauds during the concerts. Each dance pair should show their party highlight in the final part of the concert, when we performed our piece the audience was applauding for 20 minutes," Tair Gatauov said. Madina Basbayeva was highly appreciated by European choreographers, after the concert she got an offer to perform Juliet in the Bordeaux Theater in Paris. "I will accept it and represent Astana Opera there. Working with different theaters is always a welcome experience for me, and what concerns Romeo and Juliet that will be premiered in Kazakhstan in December - I will be dancing it as early as in November in Bordeaux. The famous French choreography director Charles Jude offered me the opportunity. Frankly speaking, I still can't believe it. I didn't expect it, but I feel it is my part and I will perform it successfully," Madina said. Stars of the 21st Century is an annual International Ballet Gala that has taken the world-renowned stages of Paris, Cannes, New York, Toronto, Bucharest, Moscow and Panama City by storm since its debut in 1993. Featuring first class line-ups in both classical and cutting edge contemporary dance from around the globe, Stars of the 21st Century has become the most prestigious ballet gala and one of the most important cultural events in the world.
