Bekmambetov is going to make an Asian cinema hub out of Astana city, Tengrinews.kz reports, citing famous Kazakhstan-born film director Timur Bekmambetov as saying at the press-conference in Astana on July 1 prior to the opening of Action Film Festival. “This year's Festival is making a significant step towards young film makers. We are not going to arrange a parade of cinema stars that were popular in the 1990s once again. We’ve decided to do our best and make Astana a new site, a new center of Asian cinema,” Timur Bekmambetov said at the press-conference. According to the prominent film director, the organizers have invited young filmmakers from the most famous Asian film schools: Beijing Film Academy, Korean Academy of Film Arts and Kyoto Academy of Fine Arts. “30 filmmakers from each of these schools have arrived, 30 Kazakhstan young filmmakers that were selected here joined them. So we have got a nice company of 120 young film makers that have gained a unique opportunity to learn a lot of new things in a short period of time. They will unite and create a big team that will get acquainted with Astana and, as we expect, will develop a modern mythology of Astana city. They have been assigned with a task to come up with an image of a young super-hero that lives in our beautiful city,” Bekmambetov added. Timur Bekmambetov is a Kazakhstan-born film director, producer and screenwriter. He is best known for the Russian film Night Watch (2004) and its sequel Day Watch (2006), and the American film Wanted (2008). He also directed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter that hit the screens just recently.
