Residents of American Tucson city in the state of Arizona gifted to Almaty a sculpture that represents close relationship between the two sister cities, Tengrinews.kz reports. The sculptural composition looks like a bronze cup with symbols of Almaty and Arizona: an apple and a cactus. The sculpture was funded by Tuscon residents. It was presented to Almaty residents as a symbol of friendship between the two cities that arose more than twenty years ago. An American artist Mark Rossi is an author of the sculpture. The opening ceremony of the sculpture took place at Kok-Tobe mountain in Almaty. Akhmetzhan Yessimov, mayor of Almaty city, along with John Ordwey, American Charge D'Affairs in Kazakhstan and Tuscon city representatives led by Jerry Gary, Chairman of Tuscon-Almaty Sister Cities Committee, took part in the ceremony. Yessimov said that he had instructed the city architects to prepare a decent response gift for Tucson residents. John Ordwey said that the relationship between people was the main aspect in relationship between countries, apart from economy and politics. A letter from Robert Walkup, mayor of Tuscon city was solemnly delivered to Akhmetzhan Yessimov at the ceremony. Robert Walkup wrote about his impressions during his visit to Almaty and said that the visit became “one of the brightest and memorable moment in his life.”
