Nursultan Nazarbayev met with Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, who arrived in Astana for participation in the 4th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, Tengrinews.kz reports citing Kazakhstan President’s press-service. “The fact the you, being a leader of the Orthodox Church, have arrived for the Congress, increases the level and the value of this forum. The high mission of Orthodoxy to enhance the traditional moral values of people and the society is highly important for us,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said and stressed that “it is currently very important to preserve the traditional social principles”, and this may be done only by the confessions that have been strengthening people’s faith and spirituality for many centuries, according to Nazarbayev. “This initiative requires significant administrative and diplomatic efforts, as well as a good will. The fact that the forum is held in Kazakhstan on a regular basis is good not only for your country. This is also good for other countries and religious organizations. We, Russian Orthodox Church, are delighted to use the platform of the Congress to continue our religious dialog with many affluent religious organizations. We have a system of bilateral relations and Russian church alone cannot build a permanent system of multilateral relations, as it requires huge resources,” the Patriarch said. He expressed the opinion that Kazakhstan has a high level of the dialog between the representatives of different confessions, such as Islam and Orthodox Church, with the state authorities. “Such support allows Russian Orthodox Church to implement its programs,” Patriarch Kirill stated. According to the President’s press-service, currently around 25 percent of Kazakhstan’s population is Orthodox Christians. There are 310 Orthodox unions, 9 eparchies, 266 religious buildings and 28 websites owned by the Russian Orthodox Church. “The state supports construction of new cathedrals and implementation of joint social projects on helping vulnerable social groups,” the message states.
